Ilmaäänieristys, known in English as airborne sound insulation, refers to the reduction of sound that travels through the air. This is a crucial aspect of building acoustics, aiming to prevent noise from disturbing occupants or migrating between different spaces. The effectiveness of airborne sound insulation is typically measured by the weighted sound reduction index, denoted as R'w. A higher R'w value indicates better sound insulation.

Achieving good airborne sound insulation involves several principles. Primarily, it relies on mass. Denser and heavier materials are more effective at blocking sound waves. The principle is that more energy is required to vibrate heavier structures, thus reflecting or absorbing more sound. Another key factor is the creation of airtight seals. Even small gaps or cracks can significantly compromise the sound insulation performance, as sound can easily travel through these weak points. This is why attention is paid to sealing around doors, windows, and penetrations for services like pipes and electrical conduits.

The construction of partitions also plays a vital role. Multi-layer constructions, often referred to as "discontinuous" or "composite" constructions, are generally more effective than single homogeneous layers. This involves using different materials with varying densities and stiffnesses, and importantly, incorporating air gaps or cavities between layers. These air gaps can be further enhanced by the inclusion of sound-absorbing materials, such as mineral wool or fiberglass, within the cavity. This combination of mass, airtightness, and multi-layer construction with absorption is fundamental to achieving effective airborne sound insulation in buildings.
