Ikääntymisreaktiot refer to the biological and physiological changes that occur in organisms as they age. These changes are a natural and complex process that affects all living beings. While the rate and specific manifestations of aging vary between species and individuals, common themes emerge.

Cellular senescence, a state where cells stop dividing, is a hallmark of aging. These senescent cells can accumulate and contribute to tissue dysfunction and inflammation, a phenomenon known as inflammaging. DNA damage also accumulates over time, and the body's ability to repair it may diminish, leading to further cellular and organismal decline.

Mitochondrial dysfunction, where the powerhouses of cells become less efficient, is another significant aspect of aging. This can lead to reduced energy production and increased oxidative stress. Telomere shortening, the gradual erosion of protective caps on chromosomes, is also linked to cellular aging and limits the number of times a cell can divide.

At the organismal level, ikääntymisreaktiot can manifest as a decline in physical function, such as reduced muscle mass and strength (sarcopenia), decreased bone density (osteoporosis), and impaired sensory perception. Cognitive functions may also be affected, with potential changes in memory, learning, and processing speed.
