Ikkin

Ikkin, also known as an "ikkin" or "ikkin-ring," is a traditional type of fishing net used in various parts of the world, particularly in coastal communities. These nets are typically constructed from natural fibers like hemp or cotton, though modern iterations may incorporate synthetic materials. The design of an ikkin varies depending on the specific region and the type of fish being targeted.

Generally, an ikkin consists of a conical or cylindrical netting bag attached to a frame, often made of wood or bamboo. This frame may be designed to be held by hand or attached to a boat. The net is deployed in the water, and fish are guided into the opening by the net's shape or by the movement of the water. Once a sufficient number of fish have entered, the net is lifted out of the water, trapping the catch within the netting bag.
