Ikkefødevarer

Ikkefødevarer is a term used in Danish and Norwegian to denote goods that are not edible. In retail and consumer information, the term helps distinguish products intended for consumption (food) from items that are used in households or personal care but are not meant to be eaten.

Examples of ikkefødevarer include household cleaners and detergents, cosmetics and personal care products, perfumes, toiletries, clothing and textiles, footwear, toys, electronics, garden chemicals, pet care items, office supplies, and various paper goods.

Non-food products are regulated under general product safety rules in the European Economic Area, with specific rules for particular categories. Cosmetics are governed by the Cosmetics Regulation, toys by the Toy Safety Directive, and electrical equipment by the low-voltage directive; chemical safety is addressed through REACH.

Product labeling typically includes usage instructions, hazard warnings, ingredients for cosmetics, expiry dates where applicable, and safety pictograms. Some items require child-resistant packaging or age recommendations.

Consumers handling ikkefødevarer should store them away from food, follow disposal guidelines, and recycle packaging where possible. Packaging design and material choice influence environmental impact.
