Ihonesteet

Ihonesteet is a Finnish term that translates roughly to “the skin barriers” and is used in dermatology and cosmetics discussions to refer to the protective functions of the skin’s outer layer. In Finnish-language texts, the term ihonesteet describes the barrier system that protects the body from water loss and external irritants.

Conceptually, the skin barrier primarily resides in the stratum corneum (the outermost epidermal layer) and its lipid matrix, which is largely composed of ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids. This barrier regulates transepidermal water loss and helps prevent the penetration of irritants, allergens, and microbes, thereby maintaining skin health and hydration.

Disruption of ihonesteet can result from factors such as harsh or frequent cleansing, exposure to irritants or extreme environments, aging, and genetic conditions that affect lipid production or filaggrin function. When the barrier is compromised, the skin becomes drier, more irritable, and prone to dermatitis or sensitivity.

Maintenance and restoration of the barrier emphasize gentle cleansing routines and the use of emollients or moisturizers that replenish lipids and provide occlusion. Products designed to support ihonesteet often contain ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids, humectants like glycerin, and occlusives such as petrolatum or mineral oil.

Clinical relevance includes the role of barrier function in conditions such as atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis. Understanding ihonesteet helps in selecting appropriate skincare strategies and treatments aimed at protecting and restoring the skin’s protective barrier.
