The correspondence theory of truth, one of the oldest and most intuitive, posits that a statement is true if and only if it corresponds to a fact or state of affairs in the world. For example, the statement "The sky is blue" is true if the sky is indeed blue.

The coherence theory of truth suggests that a statement is true if it coheres with a larger system of beliefs or statements. Truth is seen as a property of a set of interconnected propositions, where consistency and mutual support are key.

The pragmatic theory of truth, associated with thinkers like William James and John Dewey, holds that a belief is true if it is useful or works in practice. The truth of an idea is determined by its practical consequences and its ability to guide action effectively.

Other theories include the consensus theory of truth, which argues that truth is what would be agreed upon by rational inquirers under ideal conditions, and deflationary theories, which suggest that "truth" is not a substantive property but rather a linguistic device. The ongoing debate among these theories reflects the complex and multifaceted nature of truth itself.
