Identity and Access Management (IAM) is a framework of policies, processes, and technologies for managing digital identities and controlling access to information systems. IAM aims to ensure that the right individuals, devices, and services have the appropriate access at the right times and for the right reasons, while maintaining security and regulatory compliance.

Core functions of IAM include identity lifecycle management (provisioning and deprovisioning accounts and entitlements), authentication (verifying who a user is), and authorization (determining what an authenticated identity may do). IAM can be deployed on premises, in the cloud, or in hybrid configurations, and is often delivered as identity-as-a-service (IDaaS). Modern IAM emphasizes passwordless authentication, multi-factor authentication (MFA), device recognition, and risk-based access decisions to reduce credential risk.

Governance includes access reviews, audit trails, and regulatory compliance with frameworks such as GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, and PCI-DSS. IAM helps improve security, support compliance, increase operational efficiency, and enhance user experience by providing secure, streamlined access across applications and services.
