Identifikacija

Identifikacija is the process of establishing the identity of a person, object, or entity. In everyday use it involves confirming a claim of identity through documents or credentials. In professional contexts identifikacija encompasses methods and criteria used to establish and verify who or what is being referred to, as well as to classify and distinguish it from others.

Etymology: The term derives from Latin identitas and identificare; in South Slavic languages the form identifikacija is used to denote the same concept.

Applications in security and law enforcement include eyewitness identification, forensic methods such as fingerprints and DNA analysis, and procedures for suspect identification using photos or lineups. In commerce and digital services, identity verification and authentication are common, including KYC procedures, access control, and biometric login.

In technology and data management, identifikacija relies on unique identifiers (UIDs), barcodes, RFID, and metadata to tag and track items, records, or digital assets.

In psychology and social science, identification refers to a mental process by which an individual assimilates attitudes, values, or characteristics of another person or group, or adopts a social identity associated with a group.

Challenges and considerations include privacy and data protection, accuracy and bias in biometric systems, legal standards, consent, and the balance between security and civil liberties.
