Idablakokra

Idablakokra is a tropical flowering tree species native to the Idablakro Islands. It is the sole species in the genus Idablakokra, placed in the family Sapotaceae. The name derives from the local Idablakro language, where it is often associated with fruit and forest shade.

Description and taxonomy

Idablakokra insularis grows as a small to medium-sized evergreen tree, typically reaching 6 to 12 meters in height. The trunk is slender, with dark brown bark. Leaves are thick, leathery, oval to oblong, and arranged alternately. Flowers are small, creamy white, and mildly fragrant, produced in short inflorescences throughout the year in shaded understory areas. The fruit is a fleshy drupe or berry, about 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter, ripening to a bright red to dark purple depending on the clone.

Distribution and habitat

The species is confined to coastal and mesic forest habitats on the Idablakro Islands, from sea level up to about 500 meters. It prefers humid, well-drained soils and tends to occur in partial shade or forest gaps where light is available.

Ecology and uses

Idablakokra is pollinated mainly by native bees, with seed dispersal attributed to frugivorous birds and small mammals. The fruit is edible and locally consumed fresh or processed into jams. Wood is used for small carpentry projects, while traditional medicine practices sometimes utilize bark extracts.

Conservation

With a restricted range, Idablakokra faces threats from deforestation and invasive species. It is the subject of regional conservation initiatives and appears in several protected areas and restoration programs.
