IbibioEkid

The Ibibio-Ekid are an ethnic and linguistic grouping in southern Nigeria, concentrated in Akwa Ibom State with coastal communities along the Niger Delta. The term covers the Ibibio-speaking populations and the Ekid sub-group, most notably the Eket people, who share historical origins, language relatedness, and cultural traits.

Language and identity: They speak Ibibio or Ekid varieties, forming part of the Ibibio language cluster. The Ekid dialects are closely related to other Ibibio varieties, and many speakers are bilingual in English or Nigerian Pidgin.

History and society: The Ibibio-Ekid trace their roots to pre-colonial Niger Delta communities organized around farming and fishing with trade links to inland groups. European contact began in the 19th century, and the region later became part of the colonial administration. In 1987, Akwa Ibom State was created from Cross River State.

Culture and religion: Social organization includes traditional rulers such as village chiefs and obongs, where present. Cultural life features masquerade performances, festivals, music, crafts, and distinctive attire. Today, Christianity is widely practiced, often alongside traditional beliefs.

Today’s Ibibio-Ekid communities engage in agriculture, fishing, small-scale commerce, and oil and gas-related activities in the Niger Delta. They participate in Nigeria’s political processes and maintain language and cultural traditions through education and cultural preservation efforts.
