IRQers

IRQers is a term used in computing to refer to individuals and systems involved in managing interrupt requests (IRQs) within digital devices. IRQs are signals that alert a processor to asynchronously attend to events from hardware peripherals, timers, or other subsystems.

The scope of IRQ work includes hardware design, firmware, and operating system support. Hardware engineers configure interrupt lines and controllers (for example PICs and APICs), assign devices to specific IRQs, and implement prioritization schemes. Firmware and driver developers implement interrupt service routines (ISRs) and ensure they preserve processor state and keep latency within bounds. Operating system kernels provide mechanisms for dispatching ISRs, masking and unmasking IRQs, and coordinating with scheduling and virtualization layers.

Key concepts include IRQ lines, interrupt vectors or gates, and the distinction between an IRQ source (the hardware that generates the signal) and an IRQ handler (the software routine that runs in response). Some systems use shared IRQs where multiple devices share a line, requiring careful ISR design to identify the source.

Common challenges faced by IRQers include latency constraints, interrupt storms, priority inversion, and balancing latency with throughput. Modern systems employ advanced interrupt controllers, message-signaled interrupts, and virtualization-aware routing to manage these issues.

In practice, the term IRQer is informal and largely synonymous with those who design, configure, or manage interrupt handling in hardware, firmware, and software stacks. The concept is central to real-time performance, embedded systems, and operating system portability.
