IPv4, or Internet Protocol version 4, is the fourth generation of the Internet Protocol and has been the dominant protocol on the Internet since the 1980s. It supports packet‑switched, best‑effort delivery of data between hosts across interconnected networks. IPv4 uses 32‑bit addresses, yielding about 4.29 billion unique addresses. Packets carry upper‑layer data (such as TCP or UDP) and routing information in a header.

Addressing and header: An IPv4 header contains fields such as version, IHL, total length, TTL, protocol, header checksum, and source and destination addresses. Addresses are typically written in dotted decimal form. Subnetting with CIDR enables flexible division of the address space, and private address ranges are reserved for use within local networks.

Routing and reachability: IPv4 supports ARP on local links to map addresses to hardware addresses, and routers forward packets based on destination addresses. Fragmentation may occur if a packet exceeds the path MTU, with reassembly performed at the destination. IPv4 also supports broadcast and multicast messaging in limited scopes.

Transition and current status: Address exhaustion prompted the development of IPv6 as a successor. In practice, many networks run dual‑stack configurations, use tunneling, or employ translation mechanisms to preserve IPv4 connectivity. Despite the emergence of IPv6, IPv4 remains widely deployed and foundational to Internet activity.
