IPsecille

IPsec, short for Internet Protocol Security, is a suite of protocols used to secure IP communications by authenticating and encrypting each IP packet. It is applied at the IP layer, which is the network layer of the Internet Protocol suite. IPsec can be used to create Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and secure network traffic between two or more networks.

IPsec provides security services at the IP packet level. It achieves this through a combination of authentication, integrity, and confidentiality. Authentication ensures that the sender of the data is who they claim to be. Integrity guarantees that the data has not been tampered with in transit. Confidentiality, also known as encryption, ensures that the data cannot be read by unauthorized parties.

The core components of IPsec include Authentication Header (AH) and Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP). AH provides data integrity, authentication of the data origin, and optional anti-replay protection. ESP provides confidentiality, data origin authentication, connectionless integrity, an anti-replay service, and limited traffic flow confidentiality. IPsec also relies on Internet Key Exchange (IKE) for automated key management and establishment of security associations (SAs). SAs define the security parameters for communication between two IPsec peers.

IPsec can operate in two modes: transport mode and tunnel mode. In transport mode, the IPsec header is inserted between the original IP header and the payload, protecting only the payload. This is typically used for host-to-host communication. In tunnel mode, the entire original IP packet is encapsulated within a new IP packet, and the IPsec header is added to the new packet. This is commonly used for network-to-network communication, such as in VPNs. IPsec is widely deployed and is a fundamental technology for securing internet communications.
