IPklass is a classification framework intended for organizing and analyzing intellectual property (IP) assets. It provides a structured taxonomy that users can apply to patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, design rights, domain names, and related IP portfolios. The goal is to improve consistency in portfolio management, risk assessment, valuation, and due diligence by enabling standardized tagging, filtering, and reporting across systems and teams.

Origins and development

IPklass emerged in the 2010s through collaboration among law firms, corporate IP departments, and academic researchers seeking a common language for IP asset categorization. An independent governance body, often referred to as the IPklass Association, coordinates guideline updates, maintains the taxonomy, and publishes mapping documents to other classification schemes. Taxonomy and structure
