IPC has been a significant concept in computing for decades, referring to Inter-Process Communication. It encompasses the mechanisms that allow different processes, which are independent instances of programs running on an operating system, to exchange data and synchronize their actions. There are numerous IPC mechanisms, each with its own strengths and use cases. Shared memory is another popular method, enabling multiple processes to access a common region of RAM, which can be very efficient for large data transfers but requires careful synchronization to avoid race conditions. Message queues provide a more structured way for processes to exchange data, typically in discrete messages. Sockets, originally designed for network communication, are also widely used for IPC between processes on the same machine, offering a flexible and powerful interface.

The choice of IPC mechanism depends on factors such as the performance requirements, the nature of the data being exchanged, and the relationship between the processes. Efficient and robust IPC is fundamental to the development of complex software systems, enabling features like multitasking, distributed computing, and the creation of modular, interconnected applications.
