The process of creating an RFC is collaborative, involving contributions from engineers, researchers, and network operators worldwide.

Beyond RFCs, IETF documentation also includes Internet-Drafts (I-Ds), which are working documents that represent the ongoing development of proposed standards. I-Ds are typically valid for six months and are intended to elicit feedback from the community. Other important documentation types include Best Current Practices (BCPs), which are a subset of RFCs that define recommended approaches for network operations, and Informational RFCs, which provide background or context rather than defining a protocol. The IETF document repository is publicly accessible, making these specifications available to anyone.
