IECstandardit

IECstandardit is the Finnish term used to refer to the body of international standards published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The IEC develops standards for electrical, electronic and related technologies to promote safety, reliability and interoperability of products and systems worldwide.

The standards cover a wide range of sectors, including consumer electronics, medical devices, energy infrastructure, industrial automation and information technology equipment. They are designed to reduce risk in manufacturing and use, facilitate international trade, and support regulatory compliance.

Standards are created by IEC technical committees and subcommittees, composed of national delegations. Through working drafts, committee drafts and ballots, broad consensus is sought before publication. Maintenance cycles revise standards to reflect advances in technology and safety.

National standards bodies may adopt IEC standards as national standards or reference them in regulations. In Europe, many IEC standards are harmonized with EU directives via the CENELEC framework, enabling market access across member states.

IEC standards are accessible through the IEC Webstore and via national standard bodies; translations, including Finnish, are commonly provided or coordinated locally. Companies use IEC standards to design compliant products and to support conformity assessment and testing.

Notable examples include IEC 60601-1 for medical electrical equipment and IEC 61508 for functional safety; newer families such as IEC 62368-1 address safety for information technology equipment.

The IEC was established in 1906 and operates globally through national committees, maintaining a central repository of standards and ongoing revision programs.
