Hüdrt

Hüdrt is a fictional city in the northern highlands of the imagined nation of Thalmar. Located on the banks of the Lir River, it serves as the administrative and economic center of the surrounding region and hosts the primary railway junction linking inland towns to the coast.

The name Hüdrt appears in Thalmaric sources as an older form derived from the word for 'ford' or 'crossing', reflecting the city's historical position as a river crossing.

Hüdrt traces its origin to a medieval settlement established around a river ford. It grew as a trade post connected by river and later rail networks. A major flood in 1421 reshaped the riverfront, and the city rebuilt around a fortified core. In the 19th and 20th centuries, industrial workshops and textile mills expanded the economy, followed by modernization after 1950, including the construction of a central market and cultural quarter.

The city covers about 38 square kilometers and sits at an elevation of roughly 140 meters. The population is around 24,000, with a mix of urban residents and surrounding rural communities. The climate is temperate with mild winters and warm summers.

Hüdrt's economy centers on manufacturing, logistics, and services. The river port and rail hub support regional trade. Cultural activities include an autumn River Festival and a weekly market; the Municipal Library houses historical archives, and the Stadtmuseum preserves regional artifacts.

Hüdrt is governed by a mayor and a city council. It owns a light rail system, multiple schools, a hospital, and a chamber of commerce. Notable landmarks include the Old Town Hall, the River Quay, and the bridge known as the Crossing.
