Hüdrotermaalsed refers to processes and phenomena related to hot water or steam, particularly in a geological context. This term is commonly used to describe hydrothermal vents, which are fissures on the seafloor where geothermally heated water spews out. These vents are often found near volcanically active areas, such as mid-ocean ridges and seamounts.

The water emerging from hydrothermal vents is rich in dissolved minerals and chemicals, including sulfur compounds, methane, and various metals. As this superheated water mixes with the cold, surrounding seawater, these dissolved substances precipitate out, forming mineral deposits that can build chimney-like structures around the vents. These structures are known as "black smokers" or "white smokers," depending on the temperature and chemical composition of the vent fluid.

Hydrothermal systems play a significant role in Earth's geochemistry. They are responsible for the circulation of large volumes of seawater through the Earth's crust, leading to the chemical alteration of rocks and the redistribution of elements. Furthermore, hydrothermal vents support unique ecosystems that thrive in the absence of sunlight. Specialized bacteria and archaea form the base of the food web, utilizing chemosynthesis to convert chemical energy into organic matter. These organisms, in turn, support a diverse array of invertebrates, such as tube worms, clams, and mussels, which are adapted to the extreme conditions of high pressure, temperature, and chemical concentrations. The study of hydrothermal vents has also provided insights into the origins of life on Earth and the potential for life on other planets.
