Højhastighedstog, known in English as high-speed rail, refers to a type of railway transportation that operates at significantly faster speeds than conventional trains. Typically, high-speed lines are designed for speeds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour (124 mph) for upgraded older lines and 250 kilometers per hour (155 mph) or more for new dedicated lines. These trains often run on dedicated tracks, which are engineered with gentler curves and fewer level crossings to ensure safety and efficiency at higher velocities.

The development of high-speed rail began in Japan with the Shinkansen, also known as the "bullet train," which entered service in 1964. Since then, many countries, particularly in Europe and Asia, have invested heavily in developing their own high-speed rail networks. These systems offer a competitive alternative to air travel for medium-distance journeys, often providing city-center to city-center convenience with reduced overall travel times when factoring in airport security and transit.

The advantages of high-speed trains include reduced travel times, increased passenger capacity, and a lower environmental impact per passenger kilometer compared to many other forms of transport. They can also contribute to economic development by connecting cities and regions more effectively. However, the initial investment required for infrastructure and rolling stock is substantial, and the operational costs can be high. Maintenance of specialized tracks and vehicles is also a critical factor.
