Höyhentuppujen

Höyhentuppujen is a Finnish term that translates to "down tufts" or "fluff tufts." It refers to the soft, fluffy down that covers the bodies of young birds, particularly during their early stages of development. This down is distinct from the stiffer contour feathers that will eventually form the bird's adult plumage.

The primary function of höyhentuppujen is insulation. Young birds, especially those that are altricial (born helpless and requiring significant parental care), are unable to regulate their body temperature effectively. The dense layer of down traps air close to their bodies, providing crucial warmth and protecting them from environmental temperature fluctuations.
