Höyhenmuutokset refer to the process of feather replacement in birds. This phenomenon, also known as molting, is a natural and essential part of a bird's life cycle. Feathers, like all biological structures, have a limited lifespan and become worn or damaged over time. Molting allows birds to shed old, compromised feathers and grow new, healthy ones, ensuring optimal insulation, flight capability, and often, vibrant plumage for breeding displays.

The timing and pattern of molting vary significantly between species. Some birds undergo a complete molt annually, replacing all their feathers at once. This is often done after the breeding season, when the bird is less actively engaged in reproduction and can dedicate more energy to feather regrowth. Other species may molt more gradually, replacing feathers in stages throughout the year to maintain their ability to fly and stay warm. Juvenile birds typically undergo their first molt to transition from downy young feathers to their adult plumage.

The process of molting can be energetically demanding for birds. During a complete molt, especially, they may experience temporary limitations in flight or be more vulnerable to predators due to their compromised state. Therefore, birds often seek out safer environments and increase their food intake to support feather production. The new feathers that grow in are often structurally stronger and may differ in color or pattern, sometimes playing a role in seasonal camouflage or attracting mates.
