Höhenwege

A Höhenweg, literally translated as "high path" or "high trail," is a type of hiking trail found predominantly in mountainous regions, particularly in the Alps. These trails are characterized by their elevation, often traversing along ridges, mountain flanks, or between high mountain huts. They typically offer expansive views of the surrounding valleys, peaks, and sometimes even distant landscapes.

Höhenwege are distinct from valley trails or ascents to single summits. Instead, they are designed for traversing a long distance at a considerable altitude, often connecting various points of interest or serving as a means to link different mountain ranges. Their routes are chosen to maximize scenic vistas and provide access to remote alpine environments.

The difficulty of Höhenwege can vary significantly. Some are relatively easy, well-maintained paths suitable for experienced hikers with good stamina. Others can be challenging, involving exposed sections, scrambling, scree slopes, or requiring a head for heights and solid mountaineering experience. Navigation can sometimes be a factor, especially on less-trafficked or unmarked routes.

These trails are often associated with alpine clubs, which maintain and mark many of them. They are a popular feature for tourists and locals alike, offering a way to experience the grandeur of the mountains over extended periods. Many famous long-distance trails in alpine countries incorporate sections that are considered Höhenwege.
