Höggormabiti

Höggormabiti refers to the bite of a venomous snake, specifically the common European viper (Vipera berus), which is the only native venomous snake in Iceland. While Iceland has a small population of these snakes, they are not widespread and are primarily found in certain remote areas. Therefore, a höggormabiti is a rare occurrence.

Symptoms of a höggormabiti can vary depending on the amount of venom injected and the individual's reaction. These may include localized pain, swelling, redness, and bruising around the bite site. In some cases, more systemic symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty breathing can occur. The venom of the Vipera berus is primarily hemotoxic, affecting the blood and tissues.

Immediate medical attention is crucial if a höggormabiti is suspected. Treatment typically involves wound cleaning, immobilization of the affected limb, and administration of antivenom if indicated. The prognosis for a höggormabiti is generally good with prompt and appropriate medical care.
