Häiriöpigmentit

Häiriöpigmentit, also known as interference pigments or pearlescent pigments, are a class of special effect pigments that produce a shimmering, iridescent, or pearly appearance. Unlike conventional pigments that derive their color from selective absorption of light, interference pigments function by reflecting and refracting light waves. This phenomenon is based on the principle of thin-film interference, where light waves reflecting off the top and bottom surfaces of a thin transparent layer interfere with each other.

The color seen is not inherent to the pigment material itself but rather a result of the wavelengths of light that are constructively or destructively interfered with depending on the viewing angle and the thickness of the transparent layers. These pigments are typically composed of a substrate, often mica or synthetic substrates like borosilicate, coated with thin layers of metal oxides such as titanium dioxide and iron oxide. The precise thickness and sequence of these oxide layers determine the resulting color play.
