Hyötykustannuslaskentaa, often translated as cost-benefit analysis (CBA), is a systematic process used to evaluate the desirability of a project or decision by comparing its total expected costs against its total expected benefits. The primary goal is to determine whether the anticipated gains from an action outweigh its associated expenses. This method is widely applied in various fields, including economics, public policy, business, and environmental management, to inform decision-making and resource allocation.

The core principle of hyötykustannuslaskentaa involves quantifying and monetizing both the costs and benefits as much as possible. Costs can include direct financial expenditures, but also indirect costs such as environmental impact, social disruption, or opportunity costs.
