The process often involves preregistration, replication, and adherence to predefined analysis plans to enhance rigor.

In science, hypothesis-driven research aims to test mechanisms or causal relationships, distinguishing it from purely exploratory approaches. It relies on falsifiability and statistical inference, and findings should be reproducible. While central to many disciplines, it is not the only path to knowledge.

In product development and data science, hypothesis-driven practice translates customer or market hypotheses into experiments such as A/B tests or pilot deployments. Decisions are made based on observed effects, with a preference for learning loops that validate or invalidate assumptions about user needs, value, or performance.

Advantages include clearer assumptions, more efficient use of resources, improved reproducibility, and a framework for incremental learning. Limitations include potential constraint on exploration, susceptibility to bias in hypothesis formulation, and risks associated with multiple testing if not carefully controlled.
