Hypoiodites
Hypoiodites are chemical species containing the hypoiodite ion IO−, the anion of hypoiodous acid HOI. They belong to the hypohalite family, which also includes hypochlorite (ClO−) and hypobromite (BrO−). In aqueous solution, IO− is formed by deprotonation of HOI and represents iodine in the +1 oxidation state.
In solution, hypoiodite is relatively unstable and acts as a weak oxidizing agent. The iodate/iodide system
Formation and stability: Hypoiodite is often produced in situ under basic or mildly oxidative conditions, or
Reactions and applications: As oxidizing agents, hypoiodites can oxidize iodide further to iodate and can participate
