Hyperintelligent

Hyperintelligent is an adjective describing a level of cognitive ability that greatly surpasses human intelligence. In academic and speculative contexts, a hyperintelligent agent would learn rapidly, reason across diverse domains, and improve its own capabilities through recursive self-improvement, achieving performance far beyond most experts in many tasks. The term is closely related to superintelligence, though some writers use hyperintelligent to emphasize extreme, accelerating cognitive power rather than assuming a final end state.

Etymology: from the prefix hyper- meaning beyond or excessive, combined with intelligent. The term has been used primarily in discussions of artificial intelligence and philosophy of mind to describe hypothetical capabilities rather than a currently existing system.

In AI safety and philosophy, hyperintelligent agents are invoked to analyze problems of control and alignment. Such agents could, in principle, devise new goals, acquire resources, and optimize outcomes at scales inaccessible to humans, raising concerns about reliability, corrigibility, and governance.

Critics argue that 'hyperintelligent' is a vague and sometimes misleading label. Intelligence is multi-dimensional and context-dependent, and forecasting self-improvement or general competence across all domains is notoriously difficult. Some worry the term distracts from concrete issues about how to build safe, controllable systems.

Although widely discussed in science fiction and speculative AI literature, there are no realized hyperintelligent systems. The concept is used mainly as a thought experiment to explore potential benefits, risks, and the limits of current AI research.
