Hyperiidea

Hyperiidea is a suborder of amphipods, a diverse group of crustaceans that are predominantly marine. These fascinating creatures are characterized by their large, often prominent eyes and their unique adaptations for a pelagic lifestyle. Unlike many other amphipods that inhabit the seafloor or live within benthic environments, hyperiids are typically found in the open ocean, drifting in the water column.

A defining feature of many hyperiideans is their association with gelatinous zooplankton, such as jellyfish and siphonophores. They often live within the mesoglea of these hosts, feeding on them or their mucus. This symbiotic or parasitic relationship is a key aspect of their ecology. Some species are obligate parasites, while others are more commensalistic, benefiting from shelter and food without causing significant harm to their hosts.

Hyperiideans exhibit a wide range of body forms and sizes, reflecting their evolutionary diversification within the planktonic realm. Their swimming appendages are well-developed, allowing them to navigate and maneuver effectively in the water. The large eyes are thought to be adaptations for detecting dim light in the deep ocean or for locating their gelatinous hosts. Reproduction in hyperiideans typically involves the release of planktonic eggs and larvae, which develop into free-swimming juveniles. They play a role in marine food webs, serving as prey for fish and other marine animals.
