Hypercreatininemia

Hypercreatininemia refers to an elevated level of creatinine in the blood. Creatinine is a waste product produced by normal muscle metabolism. When muscles are broken down, creatinine is released into the bloodstream and filtered out of the body by the kidneys. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, creatinine can build up in the blood, leading to hypercreatininemia.

Several factors can cause hypercreatininemia. The most common cause is kidney disease, including acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. Other causes can include severe dehydration, muscle damage from rhabdomyolysis, certain medications, and a diet high in cooked meat. Increased muscle mass can also lead to slightly higher creatinine levels, though this is generally not considered pathological.

Symptoms of hypercreatininemia are often related to the underlying cause. If it is due to kidney disease, symptoms may include changes in urination, swelling in the legs and feet, fatigue, and nausea. Diagnosis is typically made through a blood test that measures creatinine levels. Further tests, such as a urinalysis and kidney function tests, may be performed to determine the cause of the elevated creatinine.

Treatment for hypercreatininemia focuses on addressing the underlying condition. If kidney disease is the cause, treatment may involve managing blood pressure, controlling diabetes, and dietary changes. In cases of severe kidney dysfunction, dialysis or a kidney transplant may be necessary. For other causes, such as dehydration or medication side effects, addressing the specific issue can lead to a normalization of creatinine levels.
