Hydrosolvothermal

Hydrosolvothermal is a type of solvothermal synthesis that specifically uses water as the solvent. Solvothermal methods involve chemical reactions in a sealed vessel at elevated temperatures and pressures, using a solvent other than water. When water is the chosen solvent, the process is termed hydrosolvothermal. This technique allows for the synthesis of crystalline materials, particularly inorganic compounds, that might be difficult to produce under ambient conditions.

The elevated temperature and pressure in a hydrosolvothermal process, typically carried out in an autoclave, increase the solubility of many reactants and can lead to faster reaction kinetics. Water, being a polar solvent, is effective in dissolving a wide range of inorganic salts and precursors. The conditions can also influence the crystal structure, morphology, and particle size of the synthesized products. This controllability makes hydrosolvothermal synthesis a versatile tool for material scientists.

Common applications of hydrosolvothermal synthesis include the preparation of metal oxides, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and various nanoparticles. These materials find uses in catalysis, energy storage, sensors, and biomedical applications. The method is often favored for its relatively low environmental impact compared to some other high-temperature synthesis routes, as water is considered a green solvent.
