Hydroksyliryhmän

Hydroksyliryhmän, often referred to as a hydroxyl group in English, is a functional group in organic chemistry. It consists of an oxygen atom covalently bonded to a hydrogen atom, with the formula -OH. This simple yet crucial group plays a significant role in determining the chemical and physical properties of organic molecules.

When a hydroxyl group is attached to a carbon atom within an organic molecule, it forms an alcohol. For instance, methanol has one hydroxyl group attached to a methyl group (CH3OH). Ethanol, a common alcohol found in beverages, has a hydroxyl group attached to an ethyl group (C2H5OH). The presence of a hydroxyl group makes molecules polar. This polarity allows them to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, which is why many organic compounds containing hydroxyl groups, such as sugars and smaller alcohols, are soluble in water.

Hydroxyl groups are also reactive. They can participate in various chemical reactions, including esterification, where an alcohol reacts with a carboxylic acid to form an ester and water. They can also undergo oxidation, leading to the formation of aldehydes, ketones, or carboxylic acids, depending on the structure of the original molecule and the extent of oxidation. The acidity of a hydroxyl group is generally weak, but it can be deprotonated to form an alkoxide ion, which is a stronger base. In biological systems, hydroxyl groups are prevalent in carbohydrates, amino acids, and lipids, contributing to their structure, function, and interactions.
