Hungaria

Hungaria is a name with several related meanings. Historically and linguistically, Hungaria is the Latin name for the region and polity known in English as Hungary; it appears in medieval and early modern documents referring to the Kingdom of Hungary and in classical-style references, symbolism and personifications of the nation.

In astronomy, Hungaria denotes a population of small bodies at the inner edge of the main asteroid belt. The Hungaria group is a dynamical concentration with semi-major axes roughly between 1.78 and 2.00 astronomical units, relatively low eccentricities and high orbital inclinations (typically about 16°–34°). The group is named after 434 Hungaria, an asteroid discovered in 1898 by Max Wolf. Within the group, the Hungaria family is a collisional asteroid family whose members tend to have high albedos and many are E-type (enstatite-rich) objects. The region is partly isolated from the rest of the main belt by resonances and secular perturbations.

Other uses of the name include cultural and commercial applications: for example, Hungária (often written with an accent) is the name of a well-known Hungarian rock/pop band formed in the 1960s, and various ships, organizations and enterprises have borne the name. As a term it is used internationally in historical, scientific and cultural contexts to denote connections with Hungary.
