Hullámcsomag is a Hungarian term that translates to "wave packet" in English. In physics, a wave packet is a localized wave that has a limited spatial extent. It is formed by the superposition of many individual waves with different wavelengths. This superposition causes the waves to interfere constructively in a specific region and destructively elsewhere, resulting in a localized disturbance.

The concept of wave packets is crucial in quantum mechanics, where particles are described as having wave-like properties. According to quantum theory, a particle's position and momentum are not precisely defined simultaneously. Instead, a particle can be represented by a wave packet. The spatial extent of the wave packet corresponds to the uncertainty in the particle's position, while the range of wavelengths within the packet relates to the uncertainty in its momentum. A more localized wave packet, meaning it is confined to a smaller region of space, will necessarily be composed of a wider range of wavelengths, leading to greater uncertainty in momentum. Conversely, a wave packet with a narrow range of wavelengths will be more spread out in space, indicating less uncertainty in position.

The evolution of a wave packet over time is governed by the Schrödinger equation. In a free space, a wave packet generally tends to spread out as time progresses, reflecting the increasing uncertainty in the particle's position.
