Huippuurheilua
Huippuurheilua is a Finnish term that literally translates to "top-level sport" or "peak sport." It refers to the systematic training, competition, and development practices used by elite athletes in Finland and, by extension, by other national sports programmes that aim to achieve world‑class performance. The concept emerged in the 1970s as part of a broader movement to professionalise elite sport in Finland, influenced by similar initiatives in Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom. During the latter decades of the twentieth century, the term became standard in Finnish sports literature and was adopted by national sport federations, universities of physical education and government agencies that fund elite sport programs.
