Hoëspoedtreine, often referred to as high-speed rail (HSR), are a modern form of passenger rail transport that operates at significantly higher speeds than conventional rail. These trains are designed to travel at speeds typically exceeding 200 kilometers per hour (124 mph) on dedicated, specially built tracks. The development of hoëspoedtreine began in the mid-20th century, with Japan’s Shinkansen, also known as the “bullet train,” being the first operational HSR system in 1964.
