Houtverduurzaming, often translated as wood preservation or wood modification, refers to processes that enhance the durability and resistance of wood to decay, insects, and other environmental factors. These treatments are crucial for extending the lifespan of wood used in construction, outdoor applications, and other areas where it is exposed to potential damage.

There are several methods of houtverduurzaming. One common approach involves impregnation with chemicals that are toxic to fungi and insects. These chemicals are typically forced deep into the wood structure under pressure, ensuring comprehensive protection. Examples of such preservatives include copper-based compounds and organic biocides. Another category of wood preservation is physical modification. This can include thermal modification, where wood is heated to high temperatures in an oxygen-limited environment, altering its cell structure to make it more stable and resistant to moisture and decay. Acetylation is another physical process that chemically modifies wood by adding acetyl groups, increasing its resistance to water absorption and biological degradation.
