The term is closely related to hospitality, but hospitability is often considered less common in contemporary usage, with hospitality being the standard noun for the broader social and economic phenomenon.

Historically, hospitability has been a central obligation in many cultures. In traditional societies, hosting travelers could be a matter of honor and safety, supported by social norms that dictate how hosts should welcome strangers and how guests should behave. The concept also extends to digital and service contexts, where online reviews, customer experience design, and hospitality management aim to standardize and improve how guests are welcomed and cared for. While the word itself is often superseded by hospitality in everyday language, hospitability remains a useful descriptor of the underlying value: welcoming and generously hosting others.
