Hoogteverlies

Hoogteverlies, often translated as "head loss" or "pressure drop" in English, refers to the reduction in pressure or potential energy that occurs as a fluid flows through a piping system. This loss is primarily caused by friction between the fluid and the pipe walls, as well as by obstructions or changes in the pipe's geometry. Several factors contribute to height loss. The length and diameter of the pipe are significant; longer and narrower pipes generally result in greater height loss. The viscosity of the fluid also plays a role, with more viscous fluids experiencing higher frictional resistance. Furthermore, the flow rate of the fluid is a key determinant, with higher flow rates leading to increased turbulence and thus more height loss.

Turbulence is a major contributor to height loss. When fluid flow becomes turbulent, eddies and swirls form, dissipating energy and converting it into heat. Minor losses, distinct from friction losses, also occur due to fittings like elbows, valves, and sudden expansions or contractions in the pipe. These components disrupt the smooth flow of the fluid, causing localized turbulence and energy dissipation. Understanding and quantifying height loss is crucial in the design and operation of various fluid systems, including water supply networks, hydraulic circuits, and HVAC systems, to ensure adequate flow and pressure at the desired destination.
