Hoofdrotortypes

Hoofdrotortypes refers to the different configurations of the main rotor system on a helicopter. These systems are crucial for generating lift and controlling the aircraft. The most common types include the single main rotor with a tail rotor, the coaxial rotor, and the tandem rotor.

The single main rotor with a tail rotor design is the most prevalent. A large main rotor provides lift, while a smaller tail rotor counteracts the torque produced by the main rotor, preventing the fuselage from spinning. This configuration is found on a vast majority of helicopters.

Coaxial rotors involve two main rotors mounted one above the other on the same mast, rotating in opposite directions. This arrangement effectively cancels out the torque, eliminating the need for a separate tail rotor. This design offers advantages in terms of compactness and maneuverability, often seen on some Russian helicopters.

Tandem rotors feature two large main rotors positioned one in front of the other. Like coaxial rotors, they rotate in opposite directions, canceling each other's torque. This configuration allows for heavier lift capabilities and is typically employed on large transport or heavy-lift helicopters.

Each hoofdrotortype has its own set of advantages and disadvantages concerning performance, complexity, and operational characteristics, influencing the helicopter's suitability for specific missions.
