Holzinfillings

Holzinfillings are a traditional filler material used in carpentry and furniture making to fill gaps, knots, and defects in wood surfaces. They consist of finely ground wood particles blended with a binder, forming a composite that can be sanded and finished to resemble the surrounding wood.

Historically, wood fillers appeared in European cabinetmaking and joinery as an alternative to solid repairs and resinous caulking. They were valued for their ability to be dyed or stained to match different wood species and for their compatibility with hand-finishing techniques before the advent of modern synthetic fillers.

Composition and variants: Basic formulations use wood flour or sawdust with binders such as linseed oil, natural resins, casein, or plant-based gums. Some modern versions employ epoxy or acrylic bases while retaining wood particles to preserve appearance and workability. Pigmentation is commonly added to approximate grain and tone; curing habits depend on the chosen binder.

Application and finishing: Holzinfillings are packed into gaps or defects, compacted, and scraped flush with the surface. After curing, the area is sanded and finished with stains, oil, or varnish to blend with the surrounding wood. They are typically used for non-structural repairs in restoration and fine woodworking.

Properties and considerations: The material can provide aesthetic continuity and filler strength in non-load-bearing roles. It may be sensitive to moisture and wood movement, can darken with time, and often requires maintenance on historic pieces to preserve appearance.
