Hohenschwangau

Hohenschwangau is a small village in Bavaria, Germany, located near the Austrian border. It is most famous for being the site of two iconic castles: Hohenschwangau Castle and Neuschwanstein Castle. These magnificent structures draw hundreds of thousands of tourists annually, making tourism the primary economic driver for the village.

Hohenschwangau Castle, the "high swan county" castle, is a romanticist palace and the childhood home of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It was rebuilt by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria, in the 19th century on the ruins of a medieval fortress. The castle's interiors are richly decorated with frescoes depicting German legends, particularly those related to the Swan Knight.

Adjacent to Hohenschwangau Castle, perched on a dramatic cliff, is Neuschwanstein Castle. Commissioned by Ludwig II as a tribute to Richard Wagner and as a personal retreat, it is a quintessential fairy-tale castle, renowned for its idealized medieval design and stunning setting. Its construction began in 1869 but was never fully completed.

The village itself offers amenities for visitors, including hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops. The surrounding Alpine landscape provides opportunities for hiking and enjoying scenic views. The proximity to Füssen, a larger town with a historic center, further enhances the appeal of the Hohenschwangau area. Access to the castles is typically via a shuttle bus or a walk up the steep hill.
