Hoffszám

Hoffszám is a term used in Hungarian statistics to denote the number of children a woman has given birth to. It is a measure of fertility and is often used in demographic studies to analyze population trends and reproductive patterns. The Hoffszám can be calculated by summing the number of live births for each woman in a given population.

This metric is distinct from the total fertility rate (TFR), which is an average number of children born per woman over her lifetime if she were to experience the current age-specific fertility rates throughout her reproductive years. While the TFR is a projection and a snapshot of current fertility behavior, the Hoffszám is a retrospective count of actual births.

The Hoffszám is particularly useful for understanding completed family sizes and for tracking changes in reproductive behavior over time. For example, comparing the Hoffszám of different age cohorts can reveal shifts in when women have children or the total number of children they choose to have.
