HluhluweiMfolozi

Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park, located in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is the union of the Hluhluwe and iMfolozi (Imfolozi) game reserves. It is widely regarded as Africa’s oldest proclaimed nature reserve. The two reserves were established during the 19th and early 20th centuries and later merged into a single protected area that covers about 960 square kilometres. The landscape comprises savannah, woodlands, and wetlands, with rivers and hills forming a varied environment that supports diverse wildlife.

The park is famed for its rhino populations, notably white and black rhinoceros, which benefited from conservation efforts. It also hosts large herds of elephants, buffalos, giraffes, and numerous antelope species such as impala, kudu, and nyala, along with predators including lions and leopards. Birdlife is extensive, with savannah and woodland species.

Managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Hluhluwe–Imfolozi is a major destination for safaris, game drives, and walking safaris, with various lodges and camps inside and near the park. The reserve runs rhino protection programs, anti-poaching measures, and habitat management to sustain biodiversity and rhino populations. The dry winter months are popular for wildlife viewing as animals gather at water sources.
