Hjärtsjuklighet, often referred to as heart disease, encompasses a range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. These conditions can vary significantly in their causes, symptoms, and severity. Common forms include coronary artery disease, which involves the narrowing or blockage of arteries supplying the heart muscle, often leading to angina or heart attacks. Heart failure is another prevalent condition where the heart cannot pump blood effectively to meet the body's needs. Valvular heart disease affects the heart valves, impacting blood flow, while arrhythmias are disorders of the heart rhythm. Congenital heart defects are present from birth.

Risk factors for hjärtsjuklighet are multifaceted and include lifestyle choices, genetics, and environmental influences. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle are significant contributors. Family history of heart disease also plays a role. Prevention efforts focus on managing risk factors through healthy eating, regular exercise, avoiding tobacco, and maintaining a healthy weight.
