Hitsausriskejä refers to the potential hazards and dangers associated with welding processes. These risks can affect the welder, bystanders, and the surrounding environment. Common welding hazards include electric shock, burns from hot metal and sparks, eye damage from intense UV and infrared radiation, and respiratory problems from inhaling toxic fumes and gases.

Electrical hazards are present due to the high currents used in welding. Proper insulation, grounding, and avoiding wet conditions are crucial to prevent electric shock. Thermal burns can occur from direct contact with hot workpieces, welding electrodes, or molten metal, as well as from flying sparks and slag. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) like heat-resistant gloves and clothing is essential.

Radiation exposure, particularly from the welding arc, can cause severe eye damage, commonly known as arc eye or welder's flash, and skin burns. Welding helmets with appropriate shade lenses and protective clothing are necessary to mitigate these risks. Inhalation of fumes and gases produced during welding can lead to both acute and chronic health issues, including metal fume fever, lung damage, and even cancer, depending on the materials being welded. Adequate ventilation, fume extraction systems, and respiratory protection are vital.

Fire and explosion are also significant risks, especially when welding near flammable materials. Hot sparks and slag can ignite nearby combustibles. Thorough pre-weld inspections to clear the area of flammables, using fire-resistant blankets, and having fire extinguishers readily available are important preventive measures. Additionally, ergonomic risks such as repetitive strain injuries and awkward postures can occur with prolonged welding activities.
