Hitelesítés, often translated as authentication, is the process of verifying the identity of a user, device, or system. It is a fundamental security mechanism that ensures only authorized entities can access protected resources. This process typically involves presenting credentials that are then checked against stored information. Common methods of authentication include something the user knows, such as a password or PIN; something the user has, like a physical token or a smartphone; or something the user is, referring to biometric data such as a fingerprint or facial scan.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) enhances security by requiring two or more independent verification factors. For example, a user might need to enter their password (something they know) and then provide a code from their phone (something they have). Strong authentication is crucial for protecting sensitive data and preventing unauthorized access to systems and networks. The specific implementation of authentication varies widely depending on the context, ranging from simple login forms to complex enterprise security protocols. The goal remains consistent: to establish trust and confirm that an entity is indeed who or what it claims to be.
