Hipottester

Hipot tester, short for high potential tester, is electrical test equipment used to verify the dielectric strength and insulation integrity of electrical devices by applying a high voltage between conductors and their surrounding insulation. The test helps determine whether insulation can withstand voltage stress without leaking excessive current or breaking down.

Most hipot testers deliver either direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC) high voltage and measure leakage current as a key parameter. They may also perform insulation-resistance measurements, record leakage current at a specified voltage, and run programmed test sequences that ramp voltage, hold a level for a defined time, and then discharge the device safely. Many models include automatic pass/fail indication, adjustable voltage ranges, and current limits to ensure safety during testing.

Applications include quality control in electronics manufacturing, safety testing of power supplies, cables, enclosures, medical devices, automotive components, and household appliances. Compliance with safety standards often requires hipot tests as part of insulation integrity assessment.

Because hipot testing involves high voltages, operation should be performed by trained personnel with appropriate safety procedures. Equipment typically includes protective enclosures, interlocks, current-limit protection, and safe discharge circuits. Regular calibration against traceable standards ensures measurement accuracy and reliability of test results.
