Hipotprøving

Hipotprøving, also known as high-potential testing or dielectric strength testing, is a method used to evaluate the electrical insulation integrity of electrical equipment. The primary purpose of hipottesting is to detect insulation defects that might not be apparent under normal operating voltages. This testing is crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of electrical apparatus, preventing premature failure, and avoiding potential hazards like electrical shock or fires.

The test involves applying a voltage significantly higher than the equipment's normal operating voltage for a specified duration. This overpotential stress is intended to cause breakdown or flashover in any weak points within the insulation system. If the insulation can withstand the elevated voltage without breakdown, it is considered to have adequate dielectric strength. Conversely, if a breakdown occurs, it indicates a flaw in the insulation that needs to be addressed.

Hipotprøving can be performed using alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC). AC hipottesting is commonly used for testing cables, transformers, and motors. DC hipottesting is often employed for testing solid insulation, such as in switchgear or capacitors, as it can help identify moisture or contamination more effectively. The specific voltage levels, duration, and test procedures are typically defined by relevant industry standards and regulations. Regular hipottesting can significantly extend the lifespan of electrical equipment and contribute to a safer electrical environment.
